“Braking” it down: How to brake like a pro

One of the most fundamental cycling skills when out on the road is knowing when and how to use your brakes properly. Here are a few tips on using proper braking techniques when cycling.
  • To slow your bike down quickly, using your front brake is key. However, using both brakes together is the most effective method of stopping quickly and safely.
  • Keep your body low, moving your weight back in order to apply greater force on the front brake so that your bike comes to a complete stop quickly.
  •  Be aware of weather conditions as well as road situations such as bumps and potholes as these factors contribute to your tires grip and ability to brake. When cycling on wet, bumpy or uneven surfaces, reduce your speed and brake early to ensure a safe stopping distance.
  •  Avoid using your brakes when going around a corner to prevent skidding. Instead, slow down ahead of time and lightly feather your brakes if you feel you are going too fast.
