Wet weather causes slippery roads,
poor visibility and undesirable cycling conditions. As the seasons change, here
are some tips on how you can prepare for wet weather riding.
Cycling Gear: Make
sure you are prepared with the appropriate cycling clothing for the wet
weather. A soft shell or fully waterproof jacket will keep you warm and dry.
Overshoes are also important to keep your feet dry. Finally, a cycling cap
should be worn underneath of your helmet to keep water out of your eyes and
your head warm.
Bike Maintenance: To
increase the contact of your tires with the road for better grip, lower your
tire pressures. Remember to also care for the chain by applying a thicker wet
weather lubricant to keep it moving smoothly.
Plan your Route:
Avoid routes that include big climbs as large descents and increased wind can
cause you to get colder. Choose a route that is moderately challenging and not
far from home, in case the weather gets really bad and you need to cut your
ride short.
