Today is World MS Day!

Did you know that Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world? Approximately 55,000 to 75,000 Canadians are currently living with MS, with 1-3 new cases diagnosed every day.

The MS Society of Canada is a proud member of the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) and is pleased to support World MS Day (WMSD). World MS Day was launched on May 27, 2009 with over 200 events in 67 countries and provides an opportunity to raise awareness of MS, national MS societies and the global MS movement.

To show your support for World MS Day and the global MS movement, visit our  Media Downloads page to change your Facebook status and picture to an MS Badge or Logo, or Tweet that you are celebrating World MS Day, promoting MS Awareness Month, or participating in MS fundraising event.

Thank you for your continued support in the fight to end MS! Learn more about World MS Day at worldmsday.org

Fundraising Tip #6 – Organize a Garage Sale!

It’s May 22nd and we are all well into our fundraising initiatives. We’re also well into the spring season, with the warm weather upon us. But we all know what else spring time brings, spring cleaning! As you sweep away the dust that’s gathered this past year, you’ll uncover the treasures (or junk) that’s been piling up in the basement, closets, and garage. Remember, one person’s junk is another’s treasure, so turn your spring cleaning into a garage sale fundraiser!

Holding a garage sale is a good excuse to get outside and enjoy the sunshine, and a great way to get to know your community! Here’s how simple it is to put one together:

·         Round-up and set a price for all of the items with which you’re willing to part. Get the whole family to contribute some items to get them involved in the fundraising process too. Let your children know that parting with toys they no longer play with or clothes they don’t wear anymore will mean they are directly helping to support research and provide services to individuals living with MS.

·         Put up some homemade signs around your community with the date(s) and time of your sale.  If you can, contact your place of worship, community center or other places where the community gathers or put a small ad in the local classifieds.

·         It’s a good idea to advertise that the proceeds will be donated to the MS society and towards your MS Bike Tours Fundraising drive. You can also outline where the funds will be used – find more information at http://mssociety.ca

·         If you’re feeling ambitious, try to get the community involved by holding a street sale. Get your neighbours together to have a massive street-long garage sale and propose that everyone donate all or a portion of their sales to the MS Bike Tours.

·         Once you’ve covered these details, the rest is easy. Just sell your treasures (and/or junk), and, at the end of the day, count your profits!

Now go get cleaning!

MS Carnation Campaign – May 10 to 13

Did you know? Women are more than three times as likely to develop MS as men.

Many Canadians living with MS are mothers, which is why every year the MS Carnation Campaign takes place over the Mother’s Day weekend. From Thursday, May 10 to Sunday, May 13, thousands will be showing their dedication by selling carnations on street corners, in malls and other public places. Be sure to celebrate Mother’s Day and MS Awareness Month by picking up a carnation for a loved one this weekend.

We are seeking friendly, outgoing and committed volunteers to sell flowers during our annual  MS Carnation Campaign. If you’re interested in volunteering, please contact Mark.Teeple@mssociety.ca or 416-922-6600 ext. 3157.

May is MS Awareness Month!

As we enter MS Awareness Month this May, we remember that MS is a complex disease that affects every person differently. While the majority of people living with MS are diagnosed with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS), more than half will develop secondary-progressive MS within 10 years of their diagnosis; and 90 per cent will develop progressive MS within 25 years of their diagnosis.

This year, we are dedicating MS Awareness Month to raising awareness about progressive MS. To further our knowledge about progressive MS, the MS Society of Canada and Multiple Sclerosis Scientific Research Foundation are funding a $3.8 million collaborative grant to investigate the complex interplay between degeneration and inflammation in multiple sclerosis, research which may have special relevance for those with progressive forms of MS. There has never been a more hopeful time in Canadian MS research.

There are many ways you can highlight MS Awareness Month throughout the month of May:

  • Update your Facebook status and timeline cover to promote MS Awareness Month.
  • Read and repost important May Awareness Month press releases from the MS Society of Canada.
  • Launch a “Dress for MS Day” in your office by wearing “MS” red and making a donation to the MS Society of Canada.
  • From Thursday, May 10 to Saturday, May 12 be sure to use the power of the flower to end MS with the MS Carnation Campaign! Just in time for Mother’s Day, you can buy your mother or loved one a carnation from one of our volunteers.
  • Visit your local Mr. Lube on Saturday, May 12. For every oil change done that day, $5 will be donated the MS Society of Canada in support of their Founder’s Day Campaign.
  • On May 30, acknowledge and celebrate World MS Day.
  • Join the MS research teleconference taking place May 31 at 6:00 pm ET.
Since the 1970s, we have observed May as MS Awareness Month to raise awareness on behalf of people affected by MS.  Thank you for continuing to lend strength towards our efforts to end MS.
